Most of your ChatGPT traffic is hiding in Direct
GA4's AI Assistant channel is a floor. Most ChatGPT visits still land as Direct because the client strips the referrer.
GA4 got an AI Assistant channel on May 13. Treat it as a floor.
Attrifast’s aggregate across sites puts the median share of ChatGPT visits filed as Direct around 71%. The client strips the Referer header. Native apps especially. GA4 sees empty referrer, no UTM, and defaults to Direct/(none). The sessions that still pass a referrer can land in the new channel. The ones that do not sit next to typed URLs, often converting better than the Direct next to them.
AI Overviews still look like Organic Search. Perplexity often still looks like Referral. The channel list is a partial taxonomy of a signal that is mostly gone.
I have been on the other side of this for years with paid media: the platform grades its own homework, the lake disagrees, and last-click is theater. Organic assistant traffic is the same shape without a media buyer to yell at. The click happened. The receipt did not survive the handoff.
What I am doing about it
- Read AI Assistant as a lower bound, never as the whole channel.
- Do not re-explain Direct to a client as “people who typed your URL.” In 2026 it is at least two populations.
- Prefer a server-side or edge capture of the request before the browser finishes stripping what little signal is left. Free channel groupings help. They do not recover the 71%.
- Join revenue to the recovered slice before you decide the channel is small.
The IAB is writing a November framework for ads served to agents, because UTMs and referrals do not survive that journey either. Different layer. Same missing evidence.
The model is not the leak. The referrer path is.
Pre-drafted copy for each platform. X opens with the post pre-filled. LinkedIn requires a paste — the button copies the text to your clipboard and opens the composer in one click.
